Two promising basketeers from Bacolod City, Andrew Vincent Velasco and Andre Dadivas, caught the attention of Batang Gilas head coach Mike Oliver during the recent national team tryouts at the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu.
Velasco, a former varsity member of the University of St. La Salle-IS and a key player of the Stallions Basketball in Eroreco, now studies in SHS-AdC, while Dadivas is the current toast of USLS-IS. Both players were selected into the 10-man cut of the Jr. NBA All-Stars Team last year, with Velasco seeing action for the Philippine team in China last October.
Oliver, a former coach of the Far Eastern University junior Tamaraws, headed the tryouts in Cebu that will tap possible members of the national team for the 3rd Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Under-16 Championship set April 12-20 in Cagayan de Oro. As the defending champion, the Batang Gilas hopes to keep the title against rivals from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Brunei. The top three teams in the tournament will represent SEABA in the 4th FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship 2015 in Bangalore, India.
